PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a medication you take as soon as possible after potential exposure to HIV to reduce your risk of becoming infected. When used as directed, PEP has been shown to be highly effective at reducing the risk of contracting HIV.
Taking PEP after potential exposure to HIV means there’s enough drug inside you to block HIV if it enters your body.
The medication used for PEP is a tablet that contains tenofovir and emtricitabine (drugs commonly used to treat HIV). While PEP is commonly known by the brand name Truvada, there are many other brands of PEP that contain the same ingredients and work in exactly the same way – these are called generic PEP.
PEP is suitable for you if:
You are HIV negative, and you have recently been potentially exposed to HIV (for example, through unprotected sex or sharing needles).
Clinical trials have shown that PEP must be started within 72 hours of potential exposure to HIV and needs to be taken continuously for 28 days to be effective. You must take one pill a day as directed without interruption to ensure the best results.PEP is intended for emergency situations only and is not suitable for long-term use.
